Dental Cleanings

Protect Your Mouth From Gum Disease

Dental cleanings are an essential part of a good oral health routine. The American Dental Association recommends a cleaning twice a year, for patients with good oral health. In addition to cleaning your teeth at these appointments, the hygienist will talk with you about your daily oral care routine and answer all of your questions. The hygienist can also demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques, to make your homecare optimally productive.

Who Needs Cleanings?

By age four or five, children are usually ready for a dental cleaning. Until this point, they lack the ability to remain still and hold their mouth open throughout the procedure. From this age, throughout teen years and adulthood, everyone should have a dental cleaning twice per year, every six months. In many cases, dental insurance covers the complete cost of a cleaning and x-rays. However, if you do not have dental insurance, you’ll find great value at Value Dental Centers.

Benefits of Regular Cleanings

By undergoing a dental cleaning every six months, you’ll allow the hygienist to help you:

  • Remove hardened plaque, called tartar, from your teeth
  • Reduce your risk for gum disease and tooth decay
Improve or maintain good oral health
  • Promote fresh breath
  • Identify the initial signs of gum disease or diagnose the condition

What to Expect

A cleaning usually follows an exam, because both are recommended at six-month intervals. If you do not have gum disease, you can schedule your checkup and cleaning for the same appointment. (Patients with gum disease will need a deep cleaning, which must be scheduled separately due to the procedure length.) Your dental cleaning will involve:

  • Discussion of your homecare regimen and products
  • Probing and charting gum pocket depths
  • Removing plaque and tartar with ultrasonic or hand cleaning
  • Polishing teeth for a nice shine and smooth finish

Checkups, or dental exams, are invaluable to maintaining good oral health, because they allow the dentist to identify potential oral health concerns before they escalate.

Who Needs an Exam?

The American Dental Association and the Value Dental Centers teams suggest six-month exams for everyone. Adults, teenagers, and children need regular dental exams from the time the first tooth erupts.

Benefits of Regular Dental Exams

Visiting us twice a year for regular dental checkups will provide many benefits, including:

  • Detecting gum disease, oral cancer lesions, cavities, and other oral health problems early, when treatment is least invasive and most effective
  • Finding faults in existing dental work, so it can be replaced before complications arise
  • For children and teens, finding developmental concerns that require professional intervention
  • X-rays reveal potential oral health problems that are not visible to the naked eye
  • A consultation with the dentist, so he can answer all of your questions, including how your medications and health conditions may affect oral health
  • Staying on top of your oral health with regular checkups (and daily homecare) will promote retention of your natural teeth, perhaps for life
  • Personalized advice on how to best care for your teeth and gums at home

What to Expect

At every exam, the dentist will thoroughly evaluate your existing dental work, teeth, gums, jaw joints, head, and neck. Once a year, we’ll take x-rays at your checkups. You will be asked to provide a list of medications and current medical conditions. Please discuss any concerns or symptoms with the dentist, as well. The appointment will take 30 minutes to an hour. Before you go, the dentist will provide you with his findings and recommend treatment, if appropriate. We will schedule your next appointment or exam at checkout. Should you need information about our Easy Payment Plan, please ask. We want nothing to stand between you and your good oral health.

If you are interested in discussing cosmetic dental procedures, please mention your desire when booking your exam. We’ll make certain that the dentist reserves enough time in his schedule for a cosmetic consultation, in addition to your checkup.

Patients who do not have gum disease can book hygiene appointments following exams, for convenience. A regular hygiene visit takes about an hour.
