If you are suffering from gum disease, also known as periodontitis, the dentists and hygienists at Value Dental Centers will typically recommend scaling and root planing. Also known as a deep cleaning, this treatment will eliminate bacteria buildup from your teeth, above and below the gum line. Scaling and root planing will also reduce your risk for additional gum disease damage. And because gum disease is chronic, a deep cleaning is the first step in a periodontal maintenance program to keep gum disease under control.
What are Scaling and Root Planing?
During your scaling and root planing treatment, the hygienist will first numb your gums with local anesthesia. Next, he or she will scale your teeth, removing plaque and tartar, and thoroughly cleaning pockets of bacteria along the gum
line. Root planing involves reshaping rough areas on teeth roots to make them smooth, so plaque cannot easily accumulate. During the procedure, you should feel nothing but light pressure, however you may experience minimal dental sensitivity for a few days afterwards.
