Trouble Breathing While Sleep ?

You may be dealing with a moderate to severe case of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) if you snore, wake-up exhausted each morning, or have been diagnosed with narcolepsy. Our dentists may be able to treat your sleep apnea and reduce your snoring by providing you with a customized oral appliance that will realign your jaw and open your throat while you sleep. Wearing your device regularly will help you enjoy more restful sleep and improve your overall quality of life.

What is Sleep Apnea?

With sleep apnea, your lower jaw may be relaxing inward, toward your throat, causing your airway to close. The blocked air passageway will cause you to wake up (even if you’re unaware) throughout the night to resume breathing. In an apneic episode, breathing stops for 10 to 30 seconds or longer, and this can occur repeatedly, ultimately preventing REM sleep. When you stop breathing, your brain does not get sufficient oxygen, so it wakes the body to resume breathing. Anyone can develop OSA, but certain risk factors can increase your susceptibility, such as: if you smoke, if you are male, overweight, have a thick neck, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, or a family history of sleep apnea.

Who Needs Treatment?

One of the most common symptoms of sleep apnea is snoring, but other symptoms include:

  • Insomnia
  • Chronic exhaustion
  • Sore throat and/or dry mouth upon waking
  • Multiple trips to the bathroom at night
  • Forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating
  • Moodiness and irritability

Benefits of a Sleep Appliance

Within just a few days of wearing your oral appliance, you (and your sleep partner) will notice a difference. Benefits of a customized sleep apnea appliance can include:

  • Feeling more rested, happier, motivated
  • Improved cognitive function, relationships, and work performance
  • Enhanced overall wellbeing by lowering blood pressure and your risk for heart attack and stroke

Hazards of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea can affect your overall quality of life, job performance, and relationships. If untreated, it could also increase your risk for heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
